Farewell Class of 2016

Wishing all our Room 2 families a wonderful Christmas and New Year and a safe and fun filled holiday break.  It has been a great year filled with fun, laughter and learning and making new friends..
We wish all our departing Year 6's all the best for the next part of their learning journey and look forward to hearing about their future successes.

Story starter

For some of this year Room 2 have worked on writing story starters. We were told to write one about an object that we could find in the attic. I wrote my story starter about a old wedding dress that is quite dirty and worn. Here is my story starter,

Under an old tatty blanket, lying still in the gloomy damp attic was what looked like an old wedding dress. I wondered who had last worn it? How old was it? Where did it come from?  It was ripped in many places, mostly in the stomach area and mud and dirt had soaked through the dress. It shimmered like it still had some life left in it. I reached out to touch it and most of the beautiful beads fell off into my hands. I started to wondered what was the reason it became soaked in dirt and mud.

Auckland Library Road Show

In the 20th of September had a visit from the Auckland Library Road Show crew.

They showed us lots of cool things they have at the library, like eBooks,i dinosaur book,some of there favorite books and how to get a library card.

They also showed us a really funny play including some of our classmates. The i dinosaur book was really cool all you had to do was get and iPad and scan the book and whatever dinosaur you scanned would pop up on the iPad.

I really enjoyed the Auckland Library Roadshow.

Judi Billcliff

A couple of weeks ago Judi Billcliff came to our school. She talked to us about her poetry and writing. She was so funny. Some people did a play about little red riding hood but mixed it up a bit. Granny Goes Bungy Jumping is a poetry book.

   

If you are wondering what Granny has got on, it's her underwear. And she has another book it is called  Granny Goes to Hip Hop. 

 

And Granny does the Boogey.

These 3 books are what she showed us. She read some poems out of the book, some of the poems are inappropriate.One is about peeing in the shower. It was about this boy who peed in the shower when the mum found out she told his Dad and he said doesn't everyone do it.

Gold Coast Baseball

In January 2017, Thursday the 5th I will be going to Australia for baseball.

I was chosen for an U12 baseball team from Auckland and Wellington. To get in the team you had to trial, the coaches looked at your defense, pitching, batting, sprinting and stamina. We will play against the Australian teams and play 1-2 games a day. We have intense training every Saturday or Sunday, and we have to practice at home as well. My position for baseball will be outfielder, this is a very important position as lots of balls are hit into the outfield. Many famous MLB baseball players are also outfielders. I feel very proud to be playing for New Zealand. Even though this isn't officially a NZ national team, it is still a team from New Zealand.

With Wallace these last weeks we have been doing surrealism for art. We all love doing things with Mrs Wallace and she loves working with us too, this has been my favorite art project this year I really hope we do more of this down here will be my surrealism art hope you like it.

   

We are right back into it

Welcome back to you all and I hope everyone had a great break despite the less than pleasant weather.  Room 2 have got straight back into work and made a great start to the day with a focused and busy reading session.
We look forward to another hardworking term.

Tread Lightly Caravan Visit

Today Room 2 had a visit from the Tread Lightly Caravan. We learnt about caring about the environment and how one person could make a big difference. In the visit I learnt that phones don't go in the landfill because it takes more than 200 years to break down. Also I learnt that in just one day you could be wasting 30 bottles of water. I realised that turning the light off when I'm not in the room and not having the sink running, even for an extra minute, when I'm not using could help the environment a lot. Then at the end we took photos of ourselves holding what we'll do in the future to help save and care for the environment.

My visit to the Tread Lightly Caravan - Amy

Today room 2 visited the Tread Lightly Caravan. My favourite activity was Vines and Geckos. When we were at the environmental footprint first we got about 3.7 earths and the second time we did all the negative options and we got about 6.3 earths.

My second favourite activity was the exercise bike. I learnt that if you put a phone in the landfill it will stay there for hundreds of years. I also learnt to use both sides of a piece of paper,before recycling. At home I am going to start switching appliances off at the wall when I am done using them.I am also going to start picking up rubbish and putting it in the bin.

 

Tread Lightly Caravan.- Bella

Today we visited the Tread Lightly Caravan run by Sam and Lola. We learnt about how to help look after our environment. Did you know that if everyone at our school left the tap running while we brushed our teeth, we would go through 10,000 1 litre drink bottles a day!

Our senior courtyard flooring is actually made out of soft plastics, otherwise known as plastic timber.

Our family can make a change by not having showers for as long as some of us do, and on sunny days we could dry some of our laundry outside rather than in the drier.

Tread lightly - Boulton

It is a good opportunity for kids that don't know what is good and what is bad for the environment, to now understand the small things that can change environment.

I think my favourite station is the making power by your energy. This means that you can save money.

2 things that I could do to change the environment is 1, have a smaller shower, and 2, take a bike or take a walk

The Tread Lightly  told us a lot about the environment. did you know that a phone will not break down until it has been 2 hundred years.​

Tread Lightly Caravan.

Today we visited the Tread Lightly Caravan and had a great time.We did different types of activities like The Caravan, Gecko's and Vines, E waste, Storm Water and Energy. We learnt so many facts and information such as, a piece of polystyrene can turn into a Jumper and if you use a really old bolt compered to a new bolt and try generating power the newer bolt is a lot easier to generate but the older bolt uses a lot more energy. If everyone does one small thing it could change the world. I'm going to put more fruit into my lunchbox instead of pre-wrapped food.

Today Rm 2 visited the Tread Lightly Caravan and we learnt many things.  I learned to not put phones in the bin because chemicals can leak out of it and make the bin poison and to have short showers (2-4) minutes instead of long baths. Two things in my life that I am going to change is don't leave the tap on while brushing your teeth and to switch off lights when I leave the room.

Today Rm 2 Visited the Tread Lightly Caravan. It was a good Trip. We did activities in the hall, My favourite activity was the exercise bike I peddled it and switches the light on.  We did Geckos and Vines it was like snakes and ladders with Mrs V. We cranked a handle to make he light bulbs go. We had to answer questions in the Caravan one of the questions were: 'do you buy NZ Food?'. It was a nice time at Tread Lightly Caravan. One activity was about how some rubbish lasts over 100 years it turns black and some times it disappears and some you find it hard to see. I saw the boxes from the soap they were small boxes. The ones that have lasted over 100 years was very hard to see, I can't believe it! The ones that have been there for over 25 years were easy to see, it was heaps of fun!! We know to how to save the environment now. One important thing is throw rubbish in bin and we can save the world by walking to places close to us, so you don't need to take a car!

Tread lightly caravan visit - Kaitlin

On the 6 of September Room 2 had the tread lightly caravan come and see us and we learnt about e waste, which meant electronic waste.  I learnt that a phone has gold inside it and that when a phone rusts it leeks this poison. That poison goes down to the ground and though the dirt and into the streams that take it in to the ocean and the poison can kill the sea life.We looked at some rubbish and saw that oranges and apples and grapes and strawberry where thrown in the bin instead of the compost can break down and we can use it for our dirt. We learnt that leaving the water on when we brush our teeth we use up five bottles of water and that is for two mins.We brush our teeth two times a day we will use up ten bottles a day and that's a lot of water.Next time you brush your teeth turn the tap of and remember to put your food scraps in the worm bin not the bin.​​

I learnt at the tread lightly caravan that phones have gold in them and I also learnt that the battery

 inside of your phone have poison in them.

There were heaps of activities but my favorite one was looking through the telescope at some bugs.

Tread Lightly Caravan Trip - Nicholas

Today we were on the Tread Lightly Caravan trip

We were split into groups of an average of 3 to 5 people

and there were stations on different activities 

I enjoyed the geckos and vines mostly because I had great luck today when rolling the dice .

Rm 2 learnt a lot about recycling about the landfill and what we can do to change the environment even if your change is small 

I learnt about how much water we're wasting over simple things like brushing your teeth morning and at night and to save water instead of leaving the tap on while your'e brushing your teeth.

We also were told that over morning and night for Rm 2 to brush their teeth while leaving the tap on we would waste over 600 water bottles!

Tread Lightly Visit Connie

Have short showers(2-4 minutes)instead of baths. Yes I really need to work on that! Today, Tuesday 6 September 2016, the Tread Lightly Caravan came to visit Rm 2 There were 6 stations around the hall and one in the back car park.  I really enjoyed   stations 6 and 4.  At station no 6 we were seeing how our environmental foot print affected the world.  It was this quiz where you answer 22 questions.  My result was pretty...bad. I needed 2.6 earths to maintain my family's way of living if everyone was using it that way. But at least my environmental foot print was smallish. Now on to station 4.  That station, well all I have to say is that it's just so much fun! You had to ride a bike for the sander object, some sort of light and a LED light to work .Also you had to spin the lever to make a blender work. I also learned that just by turning off the tap when you're brushing your teeth can save about 5 bottles of water, and not only that but in some clothes there are plastic ? So think about it, how can you change the world?
