Story starter

For some of this year Room 2 have worked on writing story starters. We were told to write one about an object that we could find in the attic. I wrote my story starter about a old wedding dress that is quite dirty and worn. Here is my story starter,

Under an old tatty blanket, lying still in the gloomy damp attic was what looked like an old wedding dress. I wondered who had last worn it? How old was it? Where did it come from?  It was ripped in many places, mostly in the stomach area and mud and dirt had soaked through the dress. It shimmered like it still had some life left in it. I reached out to touch it and most of the beautiful beads fell off into my hands. I started to wondered what was the reason it became soaked in dirt and mud.

Auckland Library Road Show

In the 20th of September had a visit from the Auckland Library Road Show crew.
They showed us lots of cool things they have at the library, like eBooks,i dinosaur book, some of there favorite books and how to get a library card.
They also showed us a really funny play including some of our classmates. The i dinosaur book was really cool all you had to do was get and iPad and scan the book and whatever dinosaur you scanned would pop up on the iPad.

I really enjoyed the Auckland Library Roadshow.

Judi Billcliff

A couple of weeks ago Judi Billcliff came to our school. She talked to us about her poetry and writing. She was so funny. Some people did a play about little red riding hood but mixed it up a bit. Granny Goes Bungy Jumping is a poetry book.

If you are wondering what Granny has got on, it's her underwear. And she has another book it is called  Granny Goes to Hip Hop.

And Granny does the Boogey.

These 3 books are what she showed us. She read some poems out of the book, some of the poems are inappropriate. One is about peeing in the shower. It was about this boy who peed in the shower when the mum found out she told his Dad and he said doesn't everyone do it.

Gold Coast Baseball

In January 2017, Thursday the 5th I will be going to Australia for baseball.
I was chosen for an U12 baseball team from Auckland and Wellington. To get in the team you had to trial, the coaches looked at your defense, pitching, batting, sprinting and stamina. We will play against the Australian teams and play 1-2 games a day. We have intense training every Saturday or Sunday, and we have to practice at home as well. My position for baseball will be outfielder, this is a very important position as lots of balls are hit into the outfield. Many famous MLB baseball players are also outfielders. I feel very proud to be playing for New Zealand. Even though this isn't officially a NZ national team, it is still a team from New Zealand.

Tread Lightly Caravan Visit

Today Room 2 had a visit from the Tread Lightly Caravan. We learnt about caring about the environment and how one person could make a big difference. In the visit I learnt that phones don't go in the landfill because it takes more than 200 years to break down. Also I learnt that in just one day you could be wasting 30 bottles of water. I realised that turning the light off when I'm not in the room and not having the sink running, even for an extra minute, when I'm not using could help the environment a lot. Then at the end we took photos of ourselves holding what we'll do in the future to help save and care for the environment.

Room 2 discovered today just what the impact of their lifestyle has on our planet.  Many of our groups discovered that they will require two or more earths to sustain the way that they are living their lives now long term.
Ask your child.to.share what they learnt today with you.

How big is our footprint?
E-waste
How much energy can we generate
What are we using the most of?
What are recycled materials used for?

My visit to the Tread Lightly Caravan - Amy

Today room 2 visited the Tread Lightly Caravan. My favourite activity was Vines and Geckos. When we were at the environmental footprint first we got about 3.7 earths and the second time we did all the negative options and we got about 6.3 earths.
My second favourite activity was the exercise bike. I learnt that if you put a phone in the landfill it will stay there for hundreds of years. I also learnt to use both sides of a piece of paper, before recycling. At home I am going to start switching appliances off at the wall when I am done using them.I am also going to start picking up rubbish and putting it in the bin.

Tread Lightly Caravan.- Bella

Today we visited the Tread Lightly Caravan run by Sam and Lola. We learnt about how to help look after our environment. Did you know that if everyone at our school left the tap running while we brushed our teeth, we would go through 10,000 1 litre drink bottles a day!
Our senior courtyard flooring is actually made out of soft plastics, otherwise known as plastic timber.
Our family can make a change by not having showers for as long as some of us do, and on sunny days we could dry some of our laundry outside rather than in the drier.

Tread lightly - Boulton

It is a good opportunity for kids that don't know what is good and what is bad for the environment, to now understand the small things that can change environment.

I think my favourite station is the making power by your energy. This means that you can save money.

2 things that I could do to change the environment is 1, have a smaller shower, and 2, take a bike or take a walk

Tread Lightly caravan - Travis

The Tread Lightly  told us a lot about the environment. did you know that a phone will not break down until it has been 2 hundred years.

Tread Lightly Caravan.

Today we visited the Tread Lightly Caravan and had a great time.We did different types of activities like The Caravan, Gecko's and Vines, E waste, Storm Water and Energy. We learnt so many facts and information such as, a piece of polystyrene can turn into a Jumper and if you use a really old bolt compered to a new bolt and try generating power the newer bolt is a lot easier to generate but the older bolt uses a lot more energy. If everyone does one small thing it could change the world. I'm going to put more fruit into my lunchbox instead of pre-wrapped food.

Tread Lightly Caravan - Jack

Today Rm 2 visited the Tread Lightly Caravan and we learnt many things.  I learned to not put phones in the bin because chemicals can leak out of it and make the bin poison and to have short showers (2-4) minutes instead of long baths. Two things in my life that I am going to change is don't leave the tap on while brushing your teeth and to switch off lights when I leave the room.

Tread Light Caravan

Today Rm 2 Visited the Tread Lightly Caravan. It was a good Trip. We did activities in the hall, My favourite activity was the exercise bike I peddled it and switches the light on.  We did Geckos and Vines it was like snakes and ladders with Mrs V. We cranked a handle to make he light bulbs go. We had to answer questions in the Caravan one of the questions were: 'do you buy NZ Food?'. It was a nice time at Tread Lightly Caravan. One activity was about how some rubbish lasts over 100 years it turns black and some times it disappears and some you find it hard to see. I saw the boxes from the soap they were small boxes. The ones that have lasted over 100 years was very hard to see, I can't believe it! The ones that have been there for over 25 years were easy to see, it was heaps of fun!! We know to how to save the environment now. One important thing is throw rubbish in bin and we can save the world by walking to places close to us, so you don't need to take a car!

Tread lightly caravan visit - Kaitlin

On the 6 of September Room 2 had the tread lightly caravan come and see us and we learnt about e waste, which meant electronic waste.  I learnt that a phone has gold inside it and that when a phone rusts it leeks this poison. That poison goes down to the ground and though the dirt and into the streams that take it in to the ocean and the poison can kill the sea life.We looked at some rubbish and saw that oranges and apples and grapes and strawberry where thrown in the bin instead of the compost can break down and we can use it for our dirt. We learnt that leaving the water on when we brush our teeth we use up five bottles of water and that is for two mins.We brush our teeth two times a day we will use up ten bottles a day and that's a lot of water.Next time you brush your teeth turn the tap of and remember to put your food scraps in the worm bin not the bin.

I learnt at the tread lightly caravan that phones have gold in them and I also learnt that the battery
inside of your phone have poison in them.
There were heaps of activities but my favorite one was looking through the telescope at some bugs.

Tread Lightly Caravan Trip - Nicholas

Today we were on the Tread Lightly Caravan trip
We were split into groups of an average of 3 to 5 people
and there were stations on different activities
I enjoyed the geckos and vines mostly because I had great luck today when rolling the dice .
Rm 2 learnt a lot about recycling about the landfill and what we can do to change the environment even if your change is small
I learnt about how much water we're wasting over simple things like brushing your teeth morning and at night and to save water instead of leaving the tap on while your'e brushing your teeth.
We also were told that over morning and night for Rm 2 to brush their teeth while leaving the tap on we would waste over 600 water bottles!

Tread Lightly Visit Connie

Have short showers(2-4 minutes)instead of baths. Yes I really need to work on that! Today, Tuesday 6 September 2016, the Tread Lightly Caravan came to visit Rm 2 There were 6 stations around the hall and one in the back car park.  I really enjoyed   stations 6 and 4.  At station no 6 we were seeing how our environmental foot print affected the world.  It was this quiz where you answer 22 questions.  My result was pretty...bad. I needed 2.6 earths to maintain my family's way of living if everyone was using it that way. But at least my environmental foot print was smallish. Now on to station 4.  That station, well all I have to say is that it's just so much fun! You had to ride a bike for the sander object, some sort of light and a LED light to work .Also you had to spin the lever to make a blender work. I also learned that just by turning off the tap when you're brushing your teeth can save about 5 bottles of water, and not only that but in some clothes there are plastic ? So think about it, how can you change the world?

Tread lightly

Today we had a visit from the Tread Lightly crew, Laura and Sam. We went on a rotation around six activities;energy sourcing, finding out our environmental footprint,e-waste, geckos and vines and using a microscope. The energy sourcing was when we used a bike to power lights and an electrical sander.  We also had to turn a handle to power light bulbs and whizzer. It was actually harder than you'd think! E-waste is when you throw away phones. We learnt that phone companies purposely make the screen an easily able to break and coded it so that it would slow down in about four years. Whenever you say yes to an update it slows the phone and wreaks the battery. Phones have a type of gold in them but it is very small. If you change your phone every year you will go through 72 phones! And if you throw away a phone only every four years your average number of phones in your life would be 20. To find out our environmental footprint was answered questions on a touchscreen TV. My result was that if everyone lived like me we would need 2.6 earths. If feel really bad now! Geckos and vines was a New Zealand and enviromental take on snakes and ladders. If we landed on a gecko we would have to answer a New Zealand themed question. If we got it wrong we would slide down the tail. If we landed on a vine we had to answer a question. If we got it right we would climb up the vine. Using the microscope was quite fun. There were a range of things to look at; honeycombs, worms, wool and...dead animals, it was actually interesting!
Before our rotation we learnt that if everyone in our school kept the water on while brushing their teeth, all that water would fill ten thousand bottles (ten thousand litres)!
I loved the tread lightly caravan, I need to keep thinking about what impact my actions have to the environment.

Blog from Charli

Vibby-only the moments that matter
A few days ago, Mrs Knofflock taught us how to use Vibby, a website designed to take out particular parts of a youtube video. With Mrs Knofflocks' help, we made an account and composed a Vibby video using a random youtube clip. First we had to choose the part of the video we were going to use for the Vibby. Then we had to paste the youtube link onto Vibby and pause and play when we wanted to highlight the needed part. After we thought we had finished, we pressed 'Finish Vibby' and TADAA! We had completed our Vibby. Vibby started with a simple mission, to help the world make the most of a video. Vibby now has a crew of seven video geeks who help the online needs. They are even asking for more help! Vibby has a blog! Vibby's motto is, "only the moments that matter'. And I must say, I am glad someone thought of Vibby!

My Fantail Poem

Hi my name is Nicholas we have been writing poetry with Mrs Wallace since Term 2
I would like to share one of the poems that I have written that I am proud of.

Fantail

Clouds crowding
sky bucketing  rain
beautiful vibrant colours
surrounding the fantail
he spreads his wings out
Fanning his tail as he scours for food.
Twigs snapping as he flies
to different trees nothing
his last spot for food was the New Zealand bushes
at last heart stopped beating after he saw
A plethora of insects.
The bitter breeze carrying along as something giant appears
Out of nowhere the wind stops everything goes quiet some sort
Of bright light shimmers throughout the trees shining through the stars ...

Winter poem

With Mrs Wallace we wrote poems my favorite poem was the winter poem. The poems had to include personification in them. First we wrote some personification sentences in our writing book.

Room 2's Assembly Winner

Another great winner of a certificate this week was Nelia who shows initiative and great time mangement with her learning.  Go Nelia we are proud of you😀

Baileys bird poem

On Wednesdays and Thursdays Mrs Wallace teaches in Room 2. Most of the time we do really cool pieces of writing and then turn them into poems. In our poems we do things such as: alliteration, short sharp sentences, juxtaposition and a narrative process. Some of the main focus in our poems were things like birds, snakes, volcanoes, winter and night storms.
Walt: choose and use effective languageJuveniles have yellow eyerings

Beauty in the air
Cheeky smile glued on his beak
Kea perching
Rocks crumbling
He looks at the sky hoping to fly
Wings opening in the sunlight
Metallic feathers glowing
Chirp echoing
Eyes glistening
Wings whistling
Flowers swaying
Chirping loudly
He stands proud while he carefully lands
As the sun sets,
He sees the top of a human head.
He's scared
He flies away leaving a few,
Glistening feathers...

Poems with Mrs Wallace

Recently in Term 3 we have been doing story starters in writing with Mrs Wallace. Each time we had a different genre like mystery, adventure, science fiction etc.   We would start the story but not finish it. Our goal was to build tension to make the story interesting.  We also had to focus on having a similar amount of dialogue for both action and scene. Down below is my science fiction story starter which I was most proud of out of all my story starters.

I slowly crawled out of bed and glanced at the clock.
Oh no it was 8:20 there was no way I would be on time to school.
I was imagining Stella,Estelle and Skye waiting for me.
I got ready as quick as I could and sprinted off.
"Wait up!" I shouted to my friends who were now walking towards the school.
"Where were you?" asked Stella
I kicked the pebbles and ignored her.
10 mins later we arrived to the school.
Again we could already hear the screaming from the classroom in the hallway.
We put our bags down then suddenly there was a flash in whole school.
"What was that?" Estelle asked in fear.
All four of us started walking back to the door.
Then Stella pointed out a purple spiral on the wall at the end of the hallway.
We noticed something else strange; there was no other kids it was silent.
"Where have they gone?" Skye said
We finally found a kid shivering in the corner.
We then started walking to the kid then he got pulled into the purple spiral.
I gasped
"what was happening?" I asked to my friends doubting they would know.
Where did he portal lead to?
Before I knew it we were falling into the portal as well.

Teresa's Olympic news report

Here in Rm 2 we have been doing lots of work on the Olympics lately and one of the things we did was Mrs Knofflock got Rm 2 to each pick an athlete from the Rio 2016 Olympics and write a news report on them.
We decided on our success criteria before writing and used this to help us throughout the process.  We did a draft in our Written Language books and then published it onto a google drawing. The athlete I picked was Rosie Maclennan from Canada who won gold in the women's individual trampolining event. Hopefully you enjoy reading and find out a bit more about her. It was really fun to do and we all found out much more about different Olympic athletes.
By Teresa
Olympic Uniform Designs
Due to the Olympics in Rio we have decided to design our own Olympic uniform. We could make the uniform for any sport in the olympics. We had free range and could include anything that we thought would be useful and needy for the particular sport. It had to show New Zealand's culture and things significant about our country, if it be a koru, a fern or something that we felt linked with, it could be anything. It had to include colour and needed to show what the sport was by the look of it. Our class really enjoyed doing it because it let us be creative and it let us design something we really, really like.
I decided to design a uniform for archery because not many people know much about archery and don't know what happens. I feel that hidden sports should be appreciated most. I have a singlet, shorts, a bag for arrows and gloves so that the bow doesn't hurt their fingers.
This is the start of my sports t-shirt. I think some of Room Two's outfits are ready for the athletes!

Jonathan's Storm Poem

Storm Poem

I was at home all alone apart from the families old TV.
There was an intense storm blaring outside.
The TV and lights started flickering a little bit.
The flickering became more intense.
The lightning had knocked down a powerline.
Finally the lights faded out.
All he could see was darkness.
All I could hear was the sound of my breath getting louder and faster.
I listened to the thunder and lightning going crack and bang.
I was scared and I quivered like crazy.
I slipt into my room and fell onto my bed.
My eyes were drooping.
When I finally started to doze off.
I heard a walloping bang of the front door.
I thought to myself 'What could it be? Is it a burglar?'
And finally, I thought 'Am I going to die?'
Suddenly my bedroom door opened revealing a dark shadow.
My heart was practically jumping out of my chest.
I opened my mouth to scream but nothing came out.
Finally the shadow said to me
"Are you alright son?"

Room 2's Breakout!

Room 2 had a great time doing breakout. This time we had to solve an ancient Roman mystery. We had to solve puzzles that had; coordinates, roman numerals, and online quizzes. We learnt that we had to work together to be successful and solve the breakout. Our main  focus this time was to work as a team and use everybody's strengths on certain things. We solved the breakout and as a reward, Mrs Knofflock gave us five thousand house points and a free game!
Solving an online quiz
trying to work out a puzzle
Trying to figure out a code.
Working as a team.
